The average household has a multitude of different items that they are throwing away. How do you know where to properly dispose of them? Did you know if you throw lithium batteries away, they almost always start a fire? If you throw away CFL light bulbs or fluorescent light bulbs, they contain mercury which is extremely hazardous. Did you know that you can recycle a lot of your electronic waste at Best Buy instead of throwing them into the trash?
Diverting waste is SO important. It extends the life of your local landfill as well as offers resource reduction because we are recycling our waste instead of constantly just producing and purchasing new material. It takes 22 gallons of water to make one pound of plastic. It takes 650 gallons of water to make one cotton shirt. So by reducing our waste and using reusable water bottles instead of buying plastic ones, we are actually reducing our water footprint and helping preserve resources.
